In December of 2000, Ron Goedendorp ’85 and Doug Kawahara ’76 were struck with an idea they believed was long over due – a Bay Area Alumni Scholarship Fund. The scholarship’s founders felt it was necessary to highlight, within the bay area, the prestige and quality of a UCSD education. By establishing the Bay Area Alumni Scholarship Fund, founders are able to show that Alumni care for future students from the bay area.
The Bay Area Alumni Scholarship Fund is a four-year scholarship awarded to entering UCSD freshman that have graduated from a Bay Area high school. Scholarship recipients must show a need for financial assistance and remain in good academic standing with a minimum of 3.0 throughout their college career.
Founders of the Bay Area Alumni Fund
The founders – Doug Kawahara ’76, Ron Goedendorp ’85, and Andrea Rourke ’85, PhD ’93 – are all alumni of UCSD. Soon after the fund’s creation, Tom ’77 and Vicki Haggin joined in on this effort. In the first three years, as of January 2004, the group has raised $120,000 in gifts and pledges for nine UCSD Bay Area students.
Establishing a Strong Relationship
This Bay Area Alumni team has worked hard to strengthen the relationship between UCSD alumni and students, in and from the Bay Area, to the UCSD campus. The establishment and continued growth of the Bay Area Alumni Scholarship Fund guarantees a long and direct relationship with the UCSD campus and its Bay Area community.
