The Tom Bond Scholarship

The Tom Bond Scholarship is awarded to Revelle College Students entering their senior year. The scholarship recognizes both academic achievement (with a GPA of 3.6 or better) and participation in college and/or university activities.

The Tom Bond Scholarship was established to honor the former provost of Revelle College. The scholarship was originally endowed by a generous gift from Mr. and Mrs. Vijaya Shankar, parents of a former Revelle student. The scholarship has been more than matched by gifts from other parents, students, and associates of Provost Bond.

In May 2003, Tom Bond ended an academic career of 37 years at the University of California, San Diego. Bond has served as provost of Revelle College since 1983, a 20-year term during which he worked for six different vice chancellors - and set a record on campus. He came to UCSD as an assistant professor in chemistry in 1967 and before that served on the faculty at Oregon State University. He was educated at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and received his PhD from UC Berkeley.

In a recent interview in January 2004 with @UCSD, Tom Bond expressed the importance of adequate financial support for UCSD students. Bond stated, "I see a lot of students who are on some financial aid, but they have to work 20 and 30 hours a week." Bond understands that financial aid is no longer enough for student expenses. The Tom Bond Scholarship not only provides extra help for worthy candidates, but also allows for Tom Bond's legacy - as an outstanding professor and provost - to live forever on the UCSD campus.
