Student Support FAQ
Q:  Why is my gift to Student Affairs important?
A:  As the center of this great university, every graduate passes through the doors of Student Affairs. Serving needs of this diverse population of students is a tremendous task and your private gifts are what allow us to meet their varied needs.

Q:  What programs and departments does Student Affairs encompass?
A:  You can support a variety of specific departments and programs through Student Affairs including, but not limited to intercollegiate athletics, campus recreation/intramurals, student life, undergraduate colleges and scholarships.  The areas of Student Affairs, along with the groups within them, touch each student's life daily and make up the core of a student's college experience.

Q:  How can I double or even triple my gifts?
A:  Hundreds of companies, large and small, local and national, match their employees’ and their employees’ spouses gifts made to UCSD.  Check with your human resources department to find out if your company has a gift matching policy.  You may also click here to find out if your employer is a participating company.   If not, we can provide you with information to establish a gift matching program at your place of employment.

Q:  I want to make a gift to a department or organization that is not listed on your giving page. How can I do this?
A:  You may visit our general online giving page for additional giving options.  Once there, click on “Proceed to Next Step” near the bottom of the page.  On the next page, in the search section marked “2” you may type in your keyword(s) to search for the giving area of your preference.  You can also contact us directly for assistance at (858) 534-0263 or stuaffairsdev@ucsd.edu.

Q:  How do I find information about applying for scholarships?
A:  Visit UCSD Financial Aid Office webpage for information on applying for scholarships.  UCSD is one of the few universities that still offer the ability for students to apply for specific student scholarships.

Q:  What should I do if I still can't find the information I'm looking for?
A:  If you would like more information on a particular department and/or program, contact Student Affairs Development at (858) 534-0263 or stuaffairsdev@ucsd.edu and we will be glad to answer your questions.

Annual Gifts FAQ
Q:  What is annual giving?
A:  Each year, Student Affairs benefits from the generosity of alumni, parents and friends who make gifts annually in support of Student Affairs, its departments and its programs.  Currently, Student Affairs actively solicits gifts through an annual direct mail and telemarketing campaign.

Q:  Where will my annual gift be used?
A:  You have several options for supporting Student Affairs. Donors who make an annual gift of any type have a tremendous impact on the quality of student life at UCSD.

  • Unrestricted gifts may be made to the Student Affairs Unrestricted Fund.  Gifts made to this fund provide funding for Student Affairs’s greatest needs and priorities, at the discretion of the Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs.
  • Gifts can be made to designated departments or programs of your choice through Student Affairs.  These funds are used by the department chair or program director to address the most pressing needs of the unit.
  • Specialized campaign gifts can also be made to annual fund campaigns designed by a department or program to meet its particular needs and priorities.

Q:  How can I make my annual giving contribution?
A:  There are several ways to make an annual gift to Student Affairs.  You can make a pledge in response to a telephone solicitation effort.  You can return a pledge card with a gift through a direct mail solicitation effort.  You can make your gift online by clicking Give Online or you can fill out the gift form, print it out, make sure you indicate the fund you would like to support and return it to:

Endowed Gifts FAQ
Q:  What is an endowed gift?
A:  An endowment is a permanent fund that earns annual interest income through the endowment pool of the UC San Diego Foundation.  The income earned is then used for the purpose specified by the donor.  Since the principal is never used, the endowment remains in perpetuity.

Q:  What types of endowments are available?
A:  Undergraduate scholarship endowments may be applied annually toward a student’s tuition, often providing the sole means for them to attend college.  Undergraduate scholarship endowments require a minimum gift of $50,000.  Other endowed funds can be established in a wide range of donor interests with a minimum gift of $15,000.

Q:  How do I set up an endowment?
A:  To establish an endowment, which may be named as a legacy to the donor or in honor of a loved one, please contact us (858) 534-0263 or stuaffairsdev@ucsd.edu for assistance.

Current Gifts FAQ
Q:  What are current gifts?
A:  Current gifts are contributions that can be put to use by Student Affairs immediately upon receipt from the donor.  They include cash, gifts of securities and property, and matching gifts.  Most cash gifts are made through Student Affairs’s Annual Giving Funds.

Q:  How can I use securities to support Student Affairs?
A:  Gifts of common stocks, bonds, mutual funds or other appreciated securities may be made to Student Affairs.  Depending on the circumstances, the securities will either be managed or liquidated to achieve the donor’s goals.  A popular benefit of such a gift beyond the charitable income tax deduction is that, in most cases, capital gains tax on the appreciation of the securities can be avoided.

Q:  Can I donate gifts of property?
A:  Real estate gifts and many other properties of value may be given to Student Affairs.  These gifts can often receive the same tax treatment as gifts of securities – no capital gains tax plus deductibility at fair market value.
