Eric Renteria, 2010 - Jack in the Box Foundation Scholar
Major: Computer Science
Eric is a graduate of the Preuss School at UCSD, so
although his parents did not attend college, he is no
stranger to a rigorous prep school curriculum. His hard
work paid off, earning him admission to all of the colleges
he applied to; but he chose UCSD because of the
scholarship that allows him not only to attend a top university,
but also to live on campus and immerse himself in
opportunities. Specifically, he is involved in the computer
science and engineering society, and does part-time work
for computing services in the biology department—a job
he loves.
Lorraine Bueno, 2009 - Darden Restaurants Scholar
Major: Envirnmental Chemistry
While the mere thought of Math 20 Series Calculus gives
many the shivers, it was Lorraine’s favorite class in her
freshman year at UCSD. She plans to become an environmental
chemist—a field she discovered during a high
school internship at NASA. Lorraine’s parents emigrated
from Mexico and she is the first in her family to attend
college. Her options were impressive but it was this
scholarship that most influenced her decision to attend
UCSD, a world-renowned research university.
Hugo Montes, 2009 - Union Bank of California Scholar
Major: Structural Engineering
When Hugo imagines his future, he sees skyscrapers—
soaring structures that he has engineered. Hugo is a
graduate of Clairemont High in San Diego and he and
his siblings are highly motivated children of parents who
came to San Diego from Mexico. Hugo’s high school
grades, including those in ten advanced placement classes,
earned him admission to top universities but he selected
UCSD. His scholarship means that he needn’t balance
full-time work and school, which he believes is the reason
why he’s been able to keep his grades high.
