"Just think of the change we could catalyze by offering UCSD's unique brand of education to more and more deserving students." Sheldon Engelhorn '72
Sheldon Engelhorn believes that every student who has the "right stuff" deserves a shot at the kind of future-shaping education offered at UCSD. And he knows from personal experience where such an opportunity can lead. "UCSD taught me to think and question -- how to learn, and how to apply knowledge for the benefit of society," he says. Sheldon has made a career of cultivating purposeful innovation, first by working with creative scientists at the UCSD School of Medicine, and then by co-founding and investing in life-sciences companies. Today, just as he continues to steward promising technology ventures, Sheldon is also encouraging the next generation of leaders through the Engelhorn Family Scholarship Fund, founded with his wife, Susan.
The largest scholarship program designated for transfer students in the university's history, the Engelhorn Scholarships support dedicated students so they can attend UCSD after completing two years of community college. "Not all the people with the brains, imagination, and commitment to solve the world's problems have the financial resources to attend a school that will cultivate them the way UCSD can," Sheldon says. "By extending UCSD's reach to a wider pool of talent, we equip more promising young people for learning and innovation. With a degree from UCSD, you can't help but succeed."
